Dr. Meredith Ramsey
PT, DPT, Women’s Pelvic Floor Specialist, Certified Pilates Instructor
BACKGROUND
How did you get into your field?
I first became interested in physical therapy when I had PT myself as a teenager for sport-related injuries. Later, I found Pilates which helped me with my lower back pain. Physical therapy in combination with Pilates has allowed me to combine my interests of anatomy/movement and helping others.
What is your training background?
I completed my education at Elon University majoring in Exercise Science and then went on to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Duke University. Afterwards, I completed a comprehensive Pilates teacher training program at The Pilates Center. Several years ago, I pursued another interest of mine and gained additional training in women’s pelvic health from the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. I have been practicing a little shy of 10 years and have worked with individuals throughout the lifespan from infants to adults in their 90s.
Who influenced your career path (who have you enjoyed learning from, mentor, etc)?
A professor I had in PT school, Dr. Carol Figuers, first introduced me to pelvic health physical therapy. She was a big inspiration for me in that it was very apparent how much she loved PT and helping others. Another mentor of mine was Dr. Mischa Decker, a physical therapist who specializes in Pilates-based PT. I had the opportunity to learn from her early on in my career about incorporating Pilates in the rehab setting. My patients have also influenced me over the years and helped to shape me into the clinician I am today.
What makes you love your field?
I love being able to help others and be part of their healing journey and share the knowledge I have learned to help people improve their health and wellness.
INTERESTS/SPECIALITIES
What sets you apart?
My training in Pilates offers a unique tool to add to the rehab setting. Pilates can be beneficial for anyone whether you are recovering from an injury and/or have pain or wanting to prevent injury and maintain strength and flexibility.
What kind of clients do you love working with?
Pilates is a big interest of mine and I have seen and felt how helpful it can be. I enjoy being able to work with all people to incorporate this into their PT and/or wellness program. Given my training in pelvic health, I also enjoy working with women who have pelvic health concerns. These symptoms were often overlooked in the past and there is a lot that physical therapy can do to help with symptoms such as incontinence and pelvic pain whether related to childbirth or not.
What’s your mission?
To help others in their path towards healing and improving/maintaining their health.
HOBBIES
What brings you joy? What do you do with your spare time?
I enjoy riding my bike on the bike path, taking aerial yoga, playing with my pet, and spending time with my family and friends.
